What a music marketing agency for independent artists should do for your next release
Most independent artists release music with a small budget, a short timeline and no team. A good music marketing agency for independent artists fills the gaps you cannot cover yourself, spends your money where it moves numbers, and leaves you owning everything you made.
We are Think Massive, a marketing and management agency in Los Angeles. We work with artists who barely have a budget and help them turn releases into a career. Here is what that work looks like, what it costs, and what to ask any agency before you hire one.
Core marketing services for independent artists
A single release has more moving parts than most artists expect. These are the pieces that matter most, in the order they need to happen.
- Release plan. A timeline built backward from release day, so every deadline is clear 4 to 6 weeks out.
- Metadata and distribution check. Credits, ISRCs, songwriter splits and release date set correctly with your distributor. Mistakes here cost royalties later.
- Spotify editorial pitch. Submitted through Spotify for Artists at least 7 days before release, written to give curators a reason to listen.
- Pre-save and smart link. One link that sends fans to every platform and captures their email.
- Short-form content plan. Two weeks of posts and video prompts around release day.
- Paid ads. Meta and TikTok campaigns aimed at saves and follows, the signals streaming platforms reward.
- Light PR. Targeted pitches to blogs, playlists and college radio that fit your sound.
- Email. A simple sequence to the fans who pre-saved, so release day starts with listeners.
You can do some of this yourself. The value of an agency is doing all of it on time, every release, and learning from each one.
Setting a budget for your next release
Most independent singles run on total marketing budgets between $500 and $5,000. Artists with under 1,000 monthly listeners usually spend $100 to $1,000. Artists with 1,000 to 10,000 listeners spend more, often $500 to $5,000. These ranges come from 2026 industry pricing guides and match what we see with our own artists.
For a $2,000 single, a common split looks like this:
- 40 to 50% on paid social ads
- 25 to 30% on short-form video assets
- 15 to 20% on playlist pitching
- About 10% on tools, links and admin
The mistake we see most often is spending the whole budget on services and leaving nothing for ads. Fees should leave room for the money that actually reaches listeners. Ask any agency how much of your budget goes to their fee and how much goes to media.
The impact of data-driven digital ads
Ads work for independent artists when they are judged by the right numbers. Streams alone can be bought cheaply and tell you little. Saves, follows and repeat listens show real fans.
One example from our roster: Princess Nostalgia doubled her Spotify Popularity Index between June and September on just over $3,300 of ad spend. The campaigns targeted listeners of similar artists, tested several short video hooks, and moved budget each week toward the versions that drove saves.
Before you run ads, decide what success looks like for this release, such as cost per save, follower growth or Popularity Index. Then check those numbers weekly and adjust.
Collect every royalty you earn
Marketing grows your streams. Clean registrations turn that growth into income. Check these before and after every release:
- Splits and credits. Songwriter and producer splits agreed in writing and entered with your distributor.
- Performing rights. Songs registered with your PRO (ASCAP, BMI or SESAC) so you are paid when they are played on radio, in venues and on streams.
- Mechanical royalties. Songs registered with The MLC so US streaming mechanicals reach you.
- Digital performance. Recordings registered with SoundExchange for satellite and internet radio plays.
Keep your masters and your distributor account in your name. Our job is to grow what you earn from your music, so every release we run includes this check.
